Sky and Space Global Co-Founder and CEO Meir Moalem - Interview

What Is the Background of Sky and Space Global’s Top Management?

CEO Meir Moalem is a jet fighter pilot, Lt. Col (Res.) of the IAF, has over 20 years of experience in management, R&D and operation of state-of-the-art projects in Space Systems and UAS. Meir is a Founder of Sky and Space Global and its CEO and Managing Director. Meir served as the head of Space Systems Branch in the Israeli Air Force, led the MEDIEX experiment on Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-107) as the project manager for Israel first astronaut flight and led Israel’s satellite projects including Ofeq and Techsar. During his many years of service, Meir worked with high level national security contacts, planning for strategic security requirements, projects initiation, development and design management, policy making, total responsibility for planning, while managing multi-million project budgets. Meir holds a B.Sc. in Physics from Ben Gurion University, M.A. in national security from Tel Aviv University and is in final stage of his PhD. Meir was awarded the Israel National Security Award in 2009.

With more than 20 years of satellite and aerospace industry experience, CTO Meidad Pariente is a founder of Sky and Space Global and its Chief Technical Officer. Meidad started as AMOS-1 satellite operator, later was the Deputy Mission Manager of AMOS-2, Chief systems engineer of AMOS-3 successfully launched in 2008, and special engineering advisor for AMOS-5, launched in 2011. Meidad was the chief systems engineer and led a team of Israeli engineers and scientists designing the VENUS project, an Israeli-French hyperspectral satellite. Meidad is a leading nanosatellite expert, having led projects in Israel, Europe and the USA. In 2014 Meidad and Maya led the “Duchifat-1” project, the first Israeli nanosatellite which was launched successfully in June 2014 as part of a tertiary project. The Nano-satellite is still fully operational. Meidad holds a B.Sc in Physics from Tel Aviv University and a M.E. in Systems Engineering from the Technion Aerospace faculty.

What Is Sky and Space Global's Core Product or Service?

Sky and Space Global is the first company to utilize nano-satellites in a constellation format in the communication domain. It is building a proprietary network management software platform that will enable the constellation to manage, monitor, and control itself in an automated fashion. An inter satellite connectivity-based constellation system focusing on the equatorial belt is an industry first and Sky and Space Global is doing it. The business is aiming to support existing and incoming telecom operators and service providers as they deliver affordable narrow-band services to remote locations that do not have access to reliable and affordable connectivity services. Sky and Space Global will deploy nanosatellites constellation in space and provide a global communication infrastructure.

What Is Sky and Space Global's Unique Proposition to Their Market Sector?

Sky and Space Global strongly believes in the idea that affordable connectivity is a basic human right in today’s world and is positioning its nano-satellite-based narrow-band services accordingly, so that end users in remote locations of developing economies have affordable access to basic voice and data services. Nano-satellites have so far been utilized in the earth observation domain by for-profit business models, mostly controlled by small-satellite operators, which, in itself, is a recently developed Space Mega Trend. No company other than Sky and Space Global is working on utilizing the nano-satellite form factor in the communications domain, especially in the civilian sector. This marks the company’s efforts as unique in the space. Apart from utilizing the nano-satellite form factor, Sky and Space Global is building a proprietary network management software platform that will enable the satellite constellation to function autonomously, conducting both health management and essential transmission activities. The software platform will remove the need for a widespread network of ground stations for round-the-clock telemetry and replace it with an interconnected capability covering all the nano-satellites in the constellation. The nanosatellite constellation, while being unique, will be rendered distinctly unique with such automated network management capability. Sky and Space Global will deploy nanosatellites constellation in space and provide a global communication infrastructure. Our promise is to provide affordable communication services to - ANYONE, ANYWHERE, ANYTIME.

How Does Sky and Space Global Disrupt the Competitive Environment of Its Market with Its Product/Service?

Sky and Space Global unique technology and business model allows it to build a very low CAPEX space infrastructure, based on nanosatellites which are low cost to produce and launch, but it also Sky and Space Global to have a very low operational costs model, using an autonomous network management in space. The low expenditure allows Sky and Space Global to offer the same existing services of narrowband satellite communications, at actual affordable prices. The total CAPEX + OPEX of Sky and Space Global is a fraction of the cost of competing services, disrupting the market.

What Are Sky and Space Global's Growth Objectives over the next 5 Years?

Sky and Space Global plans to deploy 200 nanostallites by the end of the decade, with replacement of 25% of the service every year, maintain the advantage in the market. By 2020, Sky and Space Global will have a full equatorial constellation, providing 24/7 services, positioned for scaling up the system as required.

What competitive changes does Sky and Space Global envisage within key markets over the next 5 years?

We believe that constellations of small satellites will become a reality, providing more and more space related services to every human being at affordable prices. By focusing on the service, rather than on the satellites, Sky and Space Global will maintain its position in the market and will keep providing competitive services and, more important, affordability to all mankind.
