NewSpace People Interview with Spaceknow

What Is the Background of Spaceknow’s Top Management?

I received my PhD in astrophysics at Johns Hopkins University, and interned at NASA, working on the Kepler space telescope. After receiving my post-graduate degree, I joined Climate Corporation when it was still just a small startup. I worked at Climate on its Geospatial Team until its acquisition by Monsanto. During the transition period I, started brainstorming ideas for a new company, which became SpaceKnow.

What Is SpaceKnow’s Core Product or Service and Its Unique Proposition to Their Market Sector?

Spaceknow provides finance and defense customers with automated object recognition services coupled with large scale economic monitoring of entire countries to extract tradable signal for professional traders. Spaceknow has dozens of customers from the FORTUNE 500 companies and numerous worldwide partners.

One of our most popular products, the China Satellite Manufacturing Index, measures levels of manufacturing activity by monitoring over 6,000 industrial facilities across China, with thousands of satellite images. The China Satellite Manufacturing Index is available on more than 375,000 Bloomberg Terminals worldwide, and SpaceKnow is the exclusive provider of satellite imagery to Bloomberg.

What Are SpaceKnow’s Growth Objectives over the next 5 Years?

We’re excited to continue improving our visual analysis tools for our existing clients and partners, as well as expanding the pool of potential users through the creation of new applications and services. Our mission is to democratize access to satellite imaging, and over the next five years we want to put these tools in as many people’s hands as possible.

What Competitive Changes Does SpaceKnow Envisage Within Key Markets over the next 5 Years?

The next five years will see a proliferation of private launches putting more satellites into orbit with increasing frequency. This means dramatically more imagery for our software to analyze, and more applications for that imagery.
