NewSpace People Interview with Optimized System Engineering

Company Update

What Is the Background of Optimized System Engineering’s Top Management?

The OSE founder’s team consists of two mechanical & space engineers, Michael Thomas (CEO) and Nicolas Rousselet (CTO). The company is a young start-up born from the desire of two engineers to develop new technologies & products using space engineering experiences and key features of additive manufacturing.

Michael is in charge of company's operations management and business development. He has graduated from universities in engineering and management and worked in various industries such as energy or financial consulting. He is an engineering business development expert and driven entrepreneur.

Nicolas is in charge of R&D developments and worked several years in aerospace industry with a solid experience in instrumentation, satellite system design and additive manufacturing associated with space development. He has had the opportunity to work on space projects for various prestigious companies such as CNRS, Safran Reosc or Airbus Safran Launchers and highly complex projects such as the E-ELT (European Extremely Large Telescope).

What Is Optimized System Engineering’s Core Product or Service?

OSE provides with multi-scale imagery solutions thanks to its advanced hardware developments for small satellites and UAV systems. We design and manufacture optical payloads for earth observation especially through additive manufacturing (more commonly called 3D printing) optimization. These specific payloads are based on advanced design, calculation and structure optimization of opto-mechanical and optical systems. It enables to enhance imaging quality, propose differentiating uses, bring new product functions while improving orbiting cost by lightweighting and miniaturizing satellite structures (OSE’s range of work is from 3U to 24U regarding satellite sizes).

We can also deliver with various types of sensors, offering the best price-performance ratio according to mission criteria.

What Is Optimized System Engineering’s Unique Proposition to Their Market Sector?

Adding value to Earth Observation (EO) missions by offering pre-qualified optical architecture, quickly adaptable to any FPA (Focal Plan Array) specifications - that means any EO missions - with extreme lightweighting, high optical performance and no higher lead time and cost than COTS components. It means that OSE’S business model, based on a product-centered strategy, enables to propose custom-made system without associated non-recurring cost.

Better payloads have impact on whole infrastructures (FPA/sensors, electronics, ADCS…), especially sensors and consequently enhance data acquisition process. OSE’s multi-scale solutions makes new missions possible, thus procuring a new valuable data-set.

How Does Optimized System Engineering’s Disrupt the Competitive Environment of Its Market with Its Product/Service?

OSE brings custom-made material in a world of COTS components with competitive price and lead time. We are deploying a complete product line, based on complex 3D printed parts (both metal and ceramics), with ultra stable and athermal characteristics and integrated thermal and mechanical functions.

The products enable to meet most highest customer performance needs while being highly adaptable to any EO mission type. So the objective is to bring flexibility into space process while keeping high performance and affordable solutions. We managed to miniaturized components in order to release payloads with high compactness and low mass supporting low cost constellation objectives.

Depending on the EO mission type, we can add a specific layer of data with UAV where our payloads can be used as well.

What Are Optimized System Engineering’s Growth Objectives over the next 5 Years?

OSE wants to be a leading innovative engineering solutions provider for Earth observation.

So we are capitalizing on the NewSpace paradigm to bring a unique offer to the market. OSE’s multi-scale solutions will provide a new layer of valuable data for the growing big data market coming up.
We rely on a solid R&D roadmap to be ahead of the market by bringing soon new optical and optronics developments with patented products.

OSE has objective to gain market share in the small satellite world and then target larger satellites, where our system will have much more impacts. In parallel, we are deploying our system to UAVs to increase the added value of space missions and provide better quality data.

What Competitive Changes Does Optimized System Engineering’s Envisage Within Key Markets over the next 5 Years?

Increasing demand in EO missions will drive further small-sat constellations. Associated with efficient low cost launcher offers arriving this year, we expect a large market coming up over the next 5 years with new entrants along with new technologies (from payloads, communication systems to thrusters). Even if this should improve small-sat life expectancy and possibly lead to less launches in a long term perspective, we will also take advantage of this change by proposing a broader offer with various layers of information targeting other markets.

Regarding country policies, NewSpace industry has different growth rate depending on the location. In United States, it is already growing at a fast pace and leading the way. But in Europe for example, Space industry is in hand of very large companies and governments. NewSpace philosophy will take more time to be deeply implemented but global competition will lead government legislation to evolve to allow easier access to space with lower cost. Asia will also see their market change and invest much more. This will unquestionably bring exciting opportunities.
