#NEW SPACE CITY
New York Insititue of Technology, 1855 Broadway, New York, NY 10023
We are Space Apps NYC a grassroots space hacker community grown from the NASA Space Apps Challenge, founded to improve life on Earth and further the exploration of space. At over 1800 members, we’re the largest regional community of this type in the world, established in 2012 – and we’re creating a next generation space science & technology hub in New York City.
In 2012, New York City became a founding site for NASA's Space Apps Challenge, a worldwide hackathon that has enabled historic global collaboration between volunteers, private companies, NGOs, and government agencies. In 2016 over 15,000 people participated all over the world from 161 cities building 1,300 projects. Since its founding, our Space Apps NYC team has locally organized five hackathons and two conferences, has hosted NASA's global mainstage two years in a row, and has grown our diverse space hacker community to the largest and most active chapter with over 1,800 hackers! Also, by partnering with Space Apps Brooklyn, we are expanding to more boroughs in order to run multiple locations for the hackathon and bootcamp.
Leading up to our hackathon we run a series of workshops and bootcamps for our hacker community. Started in 2015 under NASA’s Women in DATA initiative (now Datanauts), our bootcamps target women and minority demographics who are underrepresented in STEM programs. The content ranges from beginner’s introductions to tools and data to advanced programming, along with specialized workshops run by sponsor evangelists who cover their services and APIs in breadth and in depth.
We also host an annual Commercial Space, Science, and Frontier Technologies Conference to kick off the hackathon weekend. We invite space scientists, researchers, and engineers; space tech VCs and investors, commercial space reps, corporate execs; city, state and federal officials; celebrities, astronauts, explorers, futurists; TV and film writers and authors, all to discuss the future of space tech in New York City and across the planet with TED style talks and panels. We've had over 11,000 viewers of our livestream which covers our conference and hackathon demos. Please refer to / request the Past Speakers flier to see some of the people and companies who’ve spoken and participated at our conference.
